One of the worst tutorials I've ever seen

First of all, I like the interface. Its very spartan but it succeds in your limited content.

However, the content is entirly worthless.

The Section on Sprites is incredibly vauge when describing how to add sprites, which eliminates its value for any inexperienced flash artist. There need to be more details and more description of how to work with sprites.

The Arrow movement section is worthless because you don't explain the code, why its used, and what it means.

Also, the section on creating a play button has: no details, no code, and no useful content.

The replay button section is pointless because of the lack of redeeming qualities such as: detail, AS, and worthwhile content.

The blood section basically just tells the user to use diffrent shades of red. That's not enough content for a section of a tutorial! That provides little or nothing for the user.

This would deserve a spot on Newgrounds a few years ago, but not today. It just needs to be better :/

Try harder next time :)

No real content

There's a very, very nice background. As well there is a very nice menu and layout. However, I don't understand why one would spend so much time on a background whilst spending a very small amount of time on the actual content. The actual content is a brief and shallow description of how to make a symbol (what a symbol means or does is not discussed) followed by roughly 6 copy and paste codes. Honestly, making up 5 codes can be done by most people in less than 30 minutes. If you're going to make an Actionscript tutorial, actually explain what the codes mean, or go over Actionscript as a conceptual level.

The codes you offered are nice, but there just isn't enough here to constitute an entire flash project worthy on Newgrounds.

This got less than a 3?!?

The poor performance of this tutorial is sadening. The depth and quality of this content is UNRIVALED. This is 100000 times better than Ultimate Tutorial 2 or any of that stuff, because it actually teaches actionscript. You probably did poorly on this tutorial because of a bad interface, Newgrounds is shallow...

Yes, this has grammar issues, yes the interface is dull...

BUT IT IS STILL EXTREMELY GOOD

Its a shame this didn't do well, it really deserves a 4 or higher in my book!

Thanks. I understand about the interface. I am no good art-wise. However, I have looked at some other tutorials on ActionScript and they got higher ratings when I felt they weren't as in depth or good (non-artwise, of course) as mine. I definately agree with you on the shallowness of Newgrounds.

As I have said, I know my art skills suck. However, I'd like to know these grammar issues of which you speak. I am unsure if some of them are incorrect or just uncommon. Both should be changed, I suppose, since this tutorial was supposed to be fairly easy to read.

Maybe I'll try to make a tutorial with a better interface and everything, but sucky content and see what it gets :P

Good, but I have two suggestions

First of all, great game. Really nice

but there are a couple of things that should be done

first a listener should be added to the right click menu to disable it or change it. Because any game should not have the default right click menu...

Secondly, there should be an option which toggles music on/off and a menu that can turn volume louder or quiter, preferably a slider.

Pretty cool, blood part most useful

Although I already know how to make filters, I didn't know how to make blood like that. I am making a sequel to Actionscript Tutorial. that will be broader and bigger and I want to compile alot of data for it. I'm trying to get a broad idea of all the techniques and methodologies of graphics and animation and this has been quite helpful in expanding my library of knowledge. thx

RyanPridgeon responds:

Glad i helped.

I pity you

Making an RTS in Flash is like setting up a factory in Cuba, its near impossible and you're setting yourself up for failiure. No matter how good your RTS is, you're always going to have to fight the inability of AS to manage system resources. You'll always have lag. The better and more complex you make it, the more you expose the weaknesses of Flash.

You did a very nice job with the near impossible, but it seems like your game is going beyond what Flash can do feasibly.

Phantasmagor responds:

yes i know exactly what u mean, u pretty much summed up my dilema there, but i tried and parhaps failed but at least i tried in the 1st place.

Pretty good for beginners

All your topics feel pretty basic, but they are covered fairly well.

This movie has really nice aesthetics, and that brings it up alot.

As for the music, I don't really get why you can't make music that starts and stops. Its pretty basic whether you choose to do it with the timeline or with AS.

You make some comments that I find intriguing, like "You can't put more than one symbol on a layer". I suppose that's true for an animator, but for an AS person.

This takes an interesting animator oriented approach which feels fresh and interesting.

Overall, nice tutorial, this could be really good with some more work.

I await a sequel!

evil-burp responds:

Thank you too. I do know quite a bit about actionscript but I was aiming for an audience of people who have never done anything on flash and just want to learn the basics. I will make a tutorial soon (but not too soon) teaching people about some advanced AS and other things. And again, Thanx for a review from the point of view of an AS person

Painful and Disgusting

Don't submit anything that looks painful or gross unless you have a valid inquiry or idealogue for the forum on philosophy that is newgrounds.

I see your effort, but its worthless

To the aspiring n00b, this tutorial is of ZERO help. Actually, when I was a n00b who knew very little, this actually confused me MORE. The Ultimate Tutorial 2 is also a horrendous source for actionscript. This could help a n00b to know where everything is, so I gave it a 1. Which is pretty generous. You fail to realise that a beginner won't just know what an operator is when you cruise over it in less than one sentince. The part of making a game that is hard to a n00b will be actionscript, which I must admit is horribly explained. You need to have more detail on actionscript (like actually explain EVERY part of the code). This tutorial really didn't help me when I was a n00b.

PURE PWNAGE

This has almost no flaws. The controls are quick and precise, and the game has a real sense of speed that comes from both the gameplay and the pounding music. The moves and attacks also look and feel great. Good job.

Electrical Engineering student. Life is pretty good, but boring.
