Nice graphics but bad organization and bad grammar

Whilst the graphics in the spinning 3D cubes and other nice little effects was nice, it didn't save the tutorial from all of the poor grammar and sentince structure.

This tutorial was hard to read. Sentinces had dangling modifiers, plural verbs were used in place of singular ones. Although I'm not senselessly strict about small grammar mistakes, the grammar errors here inhibited effective understanding of the text.

So, when making a tutorial. Remember to proof-read your writing so its understandible. Good luck in the future.

Ok i understand thanks man

Put some time into these tutorials

Don't just make one every day. Although they do a decent job for what they are, they're only a few pages long. Its just not enough to cover a few lines of code in an entire flash.

Its like making a movie put making each symbol in the animation its own submission. You need to make something a little bit deeper and more comprehensive.

But your tutorial was defintly above average for Newgrounds and did a decent (although it could be better) job of explaining the code.

rdg10 responds:

Thanks, actually I tried to make this one deeper, that's why I included limits, walls, and objects.

Very good

Well, when I first saw this in judgement, I was rather shocked. This tutorial was very good. I myself am making a tutorial, so I try to look around tutorials so I can see what to expect in my own tutorial score wise.

My friend also saw it, and he thought it was very good.

He guessed that this tutorial would be 4.06 out of judgement, I predicted 4.16

And when this tutorial finally escaped judgement, I was pretty shocked that it was a 3.58. I was honestly expecting 4.2 or something in that range, since scores for clearly well made flashs tend to be very high right out of judgement.

One reason I think you did a little poorly out of judgement was that you named your tutorial "The Basics". Generally that's a rather bad name, as a lot of tutorials are named that way, and are about making buttons and feature poor and sparse explinations.

But really, nice job here. This has really got me thinking about ways I can make my own tutorial more comprehensive, as this really sets the bar very highly (although my tutorial is Actionscript oriented and thus fills a diffrent niche) for people wishing to make a tutorial.

Excellent job.

DingoEatingFuzz responds:

Wow, thank you very much. I was thinking the same thing. I thought this would score much higher than it did, It was really disappointing to see it leave with a 3.5 :( I was watching the score while it was under judgement and it peaked out at 4.26. I was wway excited, but then it just fell... a lot. Well, you can't win them all, and unfortuantely, I didn't win this one. You may be right about the name though, but it really is the best fitting name. It's just that silly n00bs submit their crap under a variant name to this making this correct name a misnomer, go figure. Well, I wish you good luck on your own tutorial and thanks again for the high hopes!

This got less than a 3?!?

The poor performance of this tutorial is sadening. The depth and quality of this content is UNRIVALED. This is 100000 times better than Ultimate Tutorial 2 or any of that stuff, because it actually teaches actionscript. You probably did poorly on this tutorial because of a bad interface, Newgrounds is shallow...

Yes, this has grammar issues, yes the interface is dull...

BUT IT IS STILL EXTREMELY GOOD

Its a shame this didn't do well, it really deserves a 4 or higher in my book!

ilikerps responds:

Thanks. I understand about the interface. I am no good art-wise. However, I have looked at some other tutorials on ActionScript and they got higher ratings when I felt they weren't as in depth or good (non-artwise, of course) as mine. I definately agree with you on the shallowness of Newgrounds.

As I have said, I know my art skills suck. However, I'd like to know these grammar issues of which you speak. I am unsure if some of them are incorrect or just uncommon. Both should be changed, I suppose, since this tutorial was supposed to be fairly easy to read.

Maybe I'll try to make a tutorial with a better interface and everything, but sucky content and see what it gets :P

Pretty cool, blood part most useful

Although I already know how to make filters, I didn't know how to make blood like that. I am making a sequel to Actionscript Tutorial. that will be broader and bigger and I want to compile alot of data for it. I'm trying to get a broad idea of all the techniques and methodologies of graphics and animation and this has been quite helpful in expanding my library of knowledge. thx

RyanPridgeon responds:

Glad i helped.

I pity you

Making an RTS in Flash is like setting up a factory in Cuba, its near impossible and you're setting yourself up for failiure. No matter how good your RTS is, you're always going to have to fight the inability of AS to manage system resources. You'll always have lag. The better and more complex you make it, the more you expose the weaknesses of Flash.

You did a very nice job with the near impossible, but it seems like your game is going beyond what Flash can do feasibly.

Phantasmagor responds:

yes i know exactly what u mean, u pretty much summed up my dilema there, but i tried and parhaps failed but at least i tried in the 1st place.

Pretty good for beginners

All your topics feel pretty basic, but they are covered fairly well.

This movie has really nice aesthetics, and that brings it up alot.

As for the music, I don't really get why you can't make music that starts and stops. Its pretty basic whether you choose to do it with the timeline or with AS.

You make some comments that I find intriguing, like "You can't put more than one symbol on a layer". I suppose that's true for an animator, but for an AS person.

This takes an interesting animator oriented approach which feels fresh and interesting.

Overall, nice tutorial, this could be really good with some more work.

I await a sequel!

evil-burp responds:

Thank you too. I do know quite a bit about actionscript but I was aiming for an audience of people who have never done anything on flash and just want to learn the basics. I will make a tutorial soon (but not too soon) teaching people about some advanced AS and other things. And again, Thanx for a review from the point of view of an AS person

Its good, but the concept is really overdone

Now, I read over the other reviews for this tutorial, and some were very far above what this deserves, and some who voted 0 and 1 were simply going dramatically below rationality. This isn't a great tutorial. What this amounts to is you explain basically nothing when it comes to codes, so this won't help anyone learn actionscript and I think thats why you got a lot of the bad reviews and low votes, there are plenty of places to get someone to tell you to copy this and put it into the actions frame, but there aren't NEARLY enough actually explaining the script and producing a deep and meaningful product. You tutorial on basic graphic elements is OK, but ultimatly very, very average. This tutorial is really a little bit above average, because the scripts you give out are kind of nice, and and you go over conceptual elements very lightly.

sk8erjames responds:

I never said it would help anyone with actionscript, but thanks for the eight

Best GAME EVER, an INSTANT CLASSIC

Dude, this is like so addicitve. This is like the best flash I've ever seen or its up there. Its a little bit challenging. The graphics are really effective, and so is the music. The gameplay is great. Im really glad you finished it, Al.

johnfn responds:

Lol, perhaps you went a little overboard. :P

Brilliant

I love it. Four great ideas. They're just reall unrefined and need alot of work. This needed alot more time. But I still love it. The mouse game is the best. Its actually quite fun.

johnfn responds:

Thanks!
